Question

self employed and pregnant, what am i entitled to?

i am 25 years old and unexpectedly pregnant. i was made redundant in december and after to failing to find a permanent job decided to open my own pet shop in july this year. my partner earns 18,000pa i cannot afford to pay myself any wage at all. we rent a small property and have £300 left after rent to run a car, pay our bills and for food etc. Are there any grants or help for new business owners or is it true that i would actually be better off going on benefits to bring up my baby, not that i ever would but just wondered if our country really has so little support for people that want to make a living rather than sponging off the goverment?

Maternity allowance is payable to the self employed www ... You should also get Child Tax Credits and Working Tax Credits, plus payment towards childcare costs once your baby is born. It sounds as if your combined income would allow you to get the minimum CTC. www ... You'll also get Child Benefit.www ... I can't imagine how you're going to manage at the end of pregnancy and just after the birth.

Wow, you don't want to go on benefits, you are rare, and a thoughtful person. Try hard! Ask around, for grants, or benefits!

You can emigrate to the United States and shop around for private insurance. That's probably about $500 a month (£300) and then your pregnancy will be considered a "pre-existing condition" and you will have to pay about $5000+ out of pocket to have a birth with no complications at a crowded County hospital

Assuming your business can still trade in a fashion when you are off then you can get statutory maternity for however long everyone is entitled too. But you must still be in employment so your self-employment needs to continue. Or stop trading and go onthe dole, and you'll probably be infinitely better off this way as you'll get your rent paid, council tax, unemployment etc etc etc. What a great country we live in.,
