Question
How do I track down someone who stole my identity and took out a mortgage in my name?
I just checked my credit report a few days ago and someone in Indianapolis took out a mortgage in my name! I live in Oklahoma and what's even funnier is that my first name was spelled wrong on the report. 2 names were listed, one was correct, one wasn't. I filled out a police report and filed a dispute with the credit agencies. But I tried to look up the address that was listed on my report and the one that the thief used isn't a real address in Indianapolis, at least I can't find it on white pages. This person used my info to get phone and cable, a credit card and a mortgage. How can I track this person down??? As soon as I can find out where this house is and who this person is I'm flying down there, taking the house that's actually mine.. SELLING it and putting this idiot in jail.. Any advice would really help me out. I know it's a longshot and I'm probabally screwed, but I thought I'd give it a try. .

First step...file a police report. Then send a copy of that to whatever mortgage loan company is listed on the credit report. State that you were a victim of identity theft and request that they investigate.

Don't jump to conclusions, credit reporting agencies make mistakes too, especially when names are similiar. Here's a document that should help you walk through the entire process: www ...

Don’t take actions into your own hands by going down there. Let the police handle that. Get your investigative skills on and Google, white pages, and cyber stalk, well, yourself to find out what you can. Turn off all their services and get any cars and that house repossessed. Call the mortgage company and report fraud. It’s unfortunately going to take a lot on your part to get this taken care of. Hope you have time for your new hobby, good luck.

First, dispute items listed with the credit bureau. It is probably not ID theft but an error. Sounds like your credit file has been merged with someone with a similar first name -- especially since both names are listed. Considering everything you have to go thru to get a mortgage, it's not exactly a prime target for ID theft. Calm down and wait for the credit bureaus to respond. You should check all three credit bureaus and send a dispute to each one that shows the extra items.
