First of all, you need to make a public announcement telling the world you have an I.T business at ViewMemo.com Then I hope you have a website, and from there you can try making backlinks to increase your search engine positioning. From there, you will gain organic hits to your site, and that means more customers

It may help if you approach less as a sales person and more as someone willing to help. IT has a lot to do with credibility. As most of your potential customers don't know how to solve their problems you'll need to gain their trust first. Here are some actions that could cost you very little and help a lot: - Create a website (or even a blog) - Post some relevant articles for free. "How to" articles are the best. - Participate of discussion forums about the topics related to your field, - Put some presentations in linked in - Spread the word about relevant posts and articles you wrote using Twitter. Your business has a lot to do with credibility and the steps above can help you to improve your credibility. Hope it helps!

Try www.gumtree.com, which is the most popular free classified advertising site for UK. Post your ads in the computer/telecom section.

All the methods you mention are very generalist and you may strike lucky with them or a lot of it may go to waste. Who is your target market? Who are your ideal customers? Are they businesses, for example? Networking is a very good way of building relationships with people who are in contact with your target markets. There are various organisations like BNI, BRX that hold weekly meetings. They're not a cheap option but you can attend a few as a guest until you see whether it's for you or not. Another way to get free help with your advertising is to speak to Business Link for London. They have a lot of information on advertising and marketing. In addition, they hold networking events, many of which are free. Well worth checking out. Good luck!

Who is your target market? E.g. Big businesses or individuals using a home computer? What do they do, where do they go, who do they trust? What's the biggest problem they face? Why would they use you over anyone else? There's loads of ways to get business - and I'm one of those people who believes that for small businesses advertising does not work! Visit us online and I can maybe help you a bit more!

Forums are a good place to start, become an expert in your field, answer questions, build your reputation, write articles, submit to article directories. Your entering a saturated market, what makes you stand out? Can you offer a USP, maybe a period of free support to prove yourself, then up sell your services. Push traffic to your site to generate interest and new clients. Look at better SEO to increase traffic, back links, keywords etc. For low cost advertising, check out My Local Services. (google it, you'll soon find us). There you can get a full page of advertising for life, web links, text, edit when you want etc. If you take out a listing with us, contact me, I'll upgrade your listing to include searches right across London. This will be for life, so should give you plenty of exposure!

Press releases can be very effective. Get interviewed by your local paper or radio station (make sure you have a good USP so you stand out). But my best suggestion for creating instant credibility if you are targeting only local consumers and small business owners, would be to contact the editor of your local paper and offer to write a weekly IT column. You can tell people how to do your job but rather than do it themselves they will call you, the expert, to do it for them. It is not hard to find topics to write about, just hang out in forums (or here). Spyware and adware could be a good one to start with a title people can relate to, like "Why is my PC running slower than it used to?" Good Luck.

Gumtreee, Viva Street etc are all classifieds where you can advertise for free - Gumtree is probably your best bet. Also join your local Business Link. They offer seminars on marketing your business at very low cost and provide lots of networking events - these are priceless as you're networking with new SME's who are going to NEED IT support. Priceless, free advertising.
