What coverages do you have on your insurance? Basic to auto insurance is liability insurance. Other things that you could have on your coverage are: uninsured motorists, under-insured motorists, PIP, and medical coverage. (These coverages may or may not be required. They may or may not be available to you. It depends upon the laws of your state or province.) None of these coverages will pay any damages to you for your loss. However, any damage to any one else caused by your car will be covered under the liability coverage you carry. If you want the damage to your car covered, it is important to know: do you have physical damage coverage? Physical damage coverage is divided into two parts: collision and other-than-collision coverage (sometimes called comprehensive coverage.) If you have physical damage coverage on your policy, something like this would be covered. If you were to collide with the tree yourself, it would be covered under your collision coverage. If you were to collide with a deer or if a large bird were to fly into your windshield, it would be covered under other-than-collision coverage (even though it would seem that there was a collision, it is covered as other-than-collision). In the unlikely case that a bear would carjack you, and cause such a collision, it would be covered. I cannot say for certain, but it might also be considered other-than-collision. However, if a bear comes out of the woods in such a scenario as you described, it would be best if you maneuvered around him or backed up away from him when he came at you than to just stay there and let him take over the car. He might just want you for his next meal rather than looking for it in your glove box. Are you taking an insurance class from IIA/AICPCU? This sounds like one of those funny scenarios they make up in their textbooks. I have taken some of them. The humor they use makes it easier to remember the concepts than if they just feed you dry facts. By the way, have you compared the cost of insurance between companies? The ones you mentioned are much more expensive than many that you can get through independent agents in your area. If you have a poor driving record, you will have to pay the high rates since the companies that charge less won't take you if you have a poor driving record.

Yes, yes they would. These things happen all the time. Over 20% of all claims are due to bear carjacking related incidents.

The question is, was the damage caused because the bear stole your car, or because you left it running? I'd suspect if you have collision and comprehensive coverage, one or the other would pick this up. But Geico will probably require you to list the bear as a driver on your auto policy, so they can surcharge for his crappy driving record.
