Question
I just turned 18 and have applied for a credit card and got denied. Reason no prior credit history?
I applied for the credit card and they send me a letter in the mail saying that they could not approve me for a credit card because I didn't have any prior credit history?? that makes no sense.

First you need a job for at least 1 year. Once you save $500, you should be able to convert into a secured credit card. Most banks should be able to set it up for you. Use it just for gas and small items and always pay the balance the following month. Make sure they belong to the credit bureau.

This is because you probably do not have a job or your bank has not accumulated enough money, also because if you do not own a house there is no collateral for them. Hope that helps

So you have to create a credit history. Ask your bank for a small loan say £500 and pay it back regularly. If you are clever you won't spend the money, just keep it in another bank account so it is there to make repayments with. Yes, you will have to pay interest, but this is the cost of creating that history. You can use a debit card instead, until you have built up a credit record.

Somehow it Makes to the Creditors, I left England 30 years ago to Reside here in the Colonies, and those Words {No Prior Credit History} Sounded like a Foreign Language to me. What you Have to Do is {will seem very Remote to you now} You'll have to Find Someone to Co-Sign, or Trust you as an Individual at Face Value, I Got Lucky I found the Latter. I Think My Accent Helped!....Bloody Yanks!.....Smile!

It makes perfect sense. You are young and have little income if any. You do not have the ability to pay back what you charge, so no lender is going to extend credit to you. You would be a huge credit risk. Debts among teens have been on the rise for years. With college costs, cars and other necessities needed to eventually start a career, teens may not be able to automatically start paying back balances owed. This could create major problems for a young person when they want to buy a home or car in the future. Just like any other kinds of debts, teen credit card debts are serious and can leave a black mark for the future. A poor credit history will prevent you from getting hired for a job. You should find a job and work on saving your money at this point. Maybe in a few years you can apply again.
