Question
Is it appropriate to give my real estate agent a gift, and if so, what type of gift?
I have an especially friendly and extra helpful real estate agent who makes herself available at all times, and has helped me with every step of the house hunting/closing process so far. She even helped me realize my rights to a Good Faith Estimate when my shady lender denied me one. My shady lender also tried to force me to buy a home in the high range, but my real estate agent actually recommended and showed me a home below what we qualified for that is beautiful. We will be closing soon, but I was wondering, is it appropriate to give her a gift after all is said and done? I told my husband that maybe we should get her a Bath and Body Works gift set, but he said that would be too 'personal' and even offensive in a way. What do you think? What do you recommend?

The best "gift" you can give to your agent is a referral. It is against the real estate ethics and morals code to accept any gifts even though it is meant as a gesture of good faith with all her help. By giving her referrals you are telling her she was a great help to you through the whole process and that you are willing to tell everyone.

You are already giving her a HUGE gift in the commission she'll get when you close. She will typically give you a thank-you gift (fruit basket, flowers). Instead, tell your friends what a great experience you had with her. Referrals are the best gift of all. If she works for an agency, write a thank-you to her boss.

Your real estate agent gets paid well to do his/her job. They get 4% of the cost of the home they sell. Sometimes a bit more.

I remember my agent jumping through hoops and bending over backward to help me get my first place. She even offered to give up her commission, and I absolutely refused. I mean, after all, she put in so much work. In the end, she brought flowers to my closing and I was so touched by the whole process I wanted to do something for her. I think I even mentioned it, saying something like, "I'm gonna get you a massage." Well, I never did anything and felt bad for it. However, as one person already mentioned in their answer: she probably got paid a pretty penny for doing her job. If she wanted anything special out of the transaction, she could always buy it herself :-)
