It's probably because the package needs a custom form. Which form depends on the weight of the package. What you can do is just go down to the post office, find out how much your box weighs, what form you need and ship it from there. I ship overseas several times a year, it usually takes 5-7 days to get to the UK or Europe, and 7-10 days to Australia, but if the packages are held up in customs that can add a week or more to it. One of mine was held two weeks in customs, when England had that subway terrorist attack, but it eventually was delivered. Keep informed with your post office, they'll answer all your questions. I do know that the media rate is being looked at very hard right now since people are abusing the use of it and sending things other than what the 'media' items are allowed.
