Question
First Apartment! Not so sure about this?
Me and my 2 sisters are moving out of our state 8 hours away back to our hometown. We will only have about 1000$ to move with. We will be moving in with a friend for 2 weeks first so we can get jobs. Do you think this is enough to move on? we are going to get an apartment for about 460$ and the deposit is 200$. It's a furnished apartment so all we are bringing is clothes and valuables. We won't be paying cell phone bill, car insurance, health insurance or any of that just yet because my parents are gonna continue to do that for a while. What other bills can I expect? And if two of us are 17 and the other is 21 is there any way we could get on food stamps for a little while? Any info greatly appreciated thanks!

I would expect: 1) Electric/gas bills 2) Utility bills 3) Pet deposit (if you're bringing a pet) 4) Laundry costs 5) Food costs Generally, I think you can make it if you are just careful. Grab 4 loaves of bread, jelly and bread at Aldi's and good luck!

A $1000 will be REALLY tight. You need to consider that it will probably take you at least 3 weeks to find a job, get hired and then another 2 weeks to get a paycheck. Food alone will cost at least a grand for the three of you and that's if you never eat a meal costing more than $5 each. Hopefully in that time your sisters are as productive as you are. It took me 3 months to find a job in Vegas and that's with a college degree. Hopefully where ever you guys are moving isn't facing economic hardships like most of the country. You don't have enough money. Sorry.

You do not sound ready to move. $1000 will not cover your rent and security deposit. There are over 14 million people out of work right now. You are not going to find a job in 2 weeks. The two of you that are 17 are not legally adults yet so you should not be moving out. Apartments conduct a background check on all prospective tenants. The 3 of you most likely would not qualify. You would be a huge credit risk. Assuming an apartment agreed to rent to you, you would be committing yourselves to a 12 month lease. You would need money for the first month rent plus security deposit. It would probably be over $1000.00. You would then need to pay rent, electric, and heat/hot water bills every month. You would also need money for food and gas. If after 3 months, you were not making enough money and wanted to go home, you would be subject to a huge breaking lease penalty. They would not care if you were unemployed or having financial problems. You should save your money and get some experience where you are now. The job market is poor across the country.
