They want your personal info for 3 reasons: 1) to follow up to make you a returning customer; 2) to sell your info to other companies; 3) for their or someone else's statistics, demographics etc. Depending on the personal info give, you might get unsolicited mail, calls, email, instant messenger messages etc. If you're lucky, they just send you their catalogs. But I wouldn't count on it. Just don't give them any info. Hope that helps.

when i worked at Yankee Candle we asked for the customers phone number so they company can send the customer coupons via mail.

I NEVER NEVER NEVER give out my address or phone number. It will result in being bombarded with junk mail advertising. Same for my email address. If they only ask for the zip code, that's no problem. Marketing firms use that information to determine the geographic area for the retailer's business.
