Hello! Yes, getting a patent is lengthy process but if you have something unique and want it protected it is certainly worthwhile. To get something patented in the U.S. you have to start by filing a patent application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark office. There are 3 types of patents that you can apply for depending on your product or service. There is the plant patent, design patent or utility patent. The first two are pretty self explanatory but a utility patent is fairly inclusive and applies to a large number of patents. To get a patent you do not necessarily need to have an attorney although having one helps. You need to start by doing a lot of research and making sure that it qualifies for a patent. You have to ascertain that this is a new or radically improved idea and that no one else has it patented or you can get into severe legal issues based on patent infringement. However, you cannot get a patent simply based on an idea, it needs to be tangible. You need to have the invention created and you need to be able to describe, in detail, all of the aspects of your invention. So, here is an outline of the steps mentioned before: 1. you usually want to get a patent lawyer they will help you out with everything you can easily find one on google but you know what I looked in to getting a product patented and it takes atleast 2 years to get it done so if you planning on getting it on the market now its not worth it good luck
