Question

if i use my prepaid credit card with only 3 dollars on it to fill up with gas what happens?

i have done this before with success. i had a prepaid credit card for 25 dollars and i charged 26 dollars worth of gas on it. i have now a prepaid credit card with 3 dollars left on it and i am thinking of filling up with gas. this will be around 60 dollars. the pump ony preauths 1 dollar so my question is who gets stuck with the bill. the gas station or the credit card company. what im saying is it preauths 1 dollar then a few days later the charge goes through and obviously there is not enough funds. so what happens then. i am long gone.

You won't get that far. When you stick the card in the slot, it will not let you pump gas. I have tried this with debit cards that I had only $20 on and they would always come back to go inside and see the cashier because the amount on the card may not be enough to cover the gas I want to buy. You can try it, but, I highly doubt you are going to be able to get $60 worth of gas on a $3 card. Also, if you do get away with it, in the not to distant future don't whine when someone steals something from you. Whatever you put out into the Universe comes back to you. Your character is showing. Just because you might get away with stealing doesn't mean you should.

I don't know for sure who gets stuck with the bill but what you're saying is yoo are going to do the equivalent of a drive off, and when the actual amount is rejected they would then charge you with theft and in many states you could lose you license for it. Prepaid credit cards don't usually offer the benefits of other cards like overcharge protection. Some cards are also set up to reject certain charges such as gas pump charges when you have less than $25 dollars.

If you place the card into the pump's card slot. it will only give you as much gas that is on your card. $3 on card equals $3 in gas. If you press the buyyon to pay inside, then you could fill it up but you will have to pay for the rest. If you do not have the money, you will be taking a nice trip to jail.

I have used my debt card, and got what I wanted to when the money was not there, it did result in a overdraft, which I had to pay back, and a extra overdraft fee on top of that. You said credit card, I would thank when they run it, it would show up as insufficient funds. and be turned down. If not then you can bet you will be the one to pay for it. Some how

Unless you went to a "pump first and pay later" station you can't do what you just described. You stiffed a gas station for $26 thinking it went on your prepaid card but what actually happened is this: The card was rejected completely and the cashier instead activated the "fill-up" function for the pump. Where you pump the gas and then come inside the store and pay for it. Gift Cards hardly ever work on the pump because the pump preauthorize at least $35 for debit and $100 and more for Credit. That means that amount is reserved on your account and then you pump against the "hold". Once you hang up the transaction is reconciled and you get charged for what you actually pumped. Gift Cards for $25 don't work at all because there isn't enough on the card to get a pre-authorization on the pump. It will get declined on the pump and then you need to go inside and prepay an amount up to $25 and then swipe your card to pay for that.

It sounds like you got lucky the first time. Most pay at the pump stations will request an authorization for about 25 gallons, which means it would run between $50 and $75. One of two things probably happened. The station probably had their card reader programmed wrong. So it requested an authorization of $25 (or less), which allowed the pump to turn on. Or the issuer of the gift card allowed the authorization for more than the card was worth. Either way I don't thing it will happen again.
