Question

Can a tenant/landlord not allow me to rent due to past relative?

Ok..here's my short story.I'm a single mother&about 2 years ago I was put on a waiting list for some low-income apartments in my hometown. When I called to check my status I was told I was taken off the list&was not allowed to rent there due to my brother&his gf who had caused severe damage to one of thier untis.I met all of the requirements&yet have been turned away several times from that location as soon as my last name is seen.Because of that my daughter and I have jumped from home to home from family memeber to family member and now this location is the last place I have to go.What can I do?? I will be starting a new job soon and will be meeting all the requirements once again..the only thing that's ever held me back is my brother's bad decisions..I really need help to know if I can change this so my daughter won't have to go through another 2 yrs of being shuffled. Please help me..thank you.

This sounds like discrimination based on the actions of another person. You are being unfairly judged. I would send a letter to the apartment complex where you are trying to rent (certified with return reciept) stating that you believe you are being discriminated against due to the unfortunate actions of your brother. Put in the letter that you will file a complaint with the attorney general's office and your local housing authority if you are not fairly considered for an apartment since you meet all the qualifications. Give the apartment complex a date to respond to your letter and if they don't follow up and file complaints.

I dont' believe so. I'm not a real estate attorney but I know that Your credibility has nothing to do with a siblings or any other person that is not joined to you in marriage for that matter. Different story if it was your spouse. Get them to put it in writing somehow why you were denied. Then go to an attorney and send me a million...; LOL J/k

I really wonder who is backing up any subsidy's for that place..Tell them to put their decision in writing and then find out if their is a formal appeal process...I have to be honest---if someone trashed one of my places---and the same last name came up again---I would have the jitters too---but would be careful to deny you based on your brothers actions..Maybe if you offer to sign a form saying he will not come around it will make a difference...This really made me think--its a fine line if this is discrimanation-or not--you weren't living with him when he screwed up-but-the last name--I would say not again--and as a landlord consult my attorney to figure it out..I hope things work out for you-tell your Brother-thanks.....
