Question

Is it possible to buy a whole state, or at least a city?

I know this is an odd question, but I'm only 13 and wondering: If I had enough money, (which I know would be millions I'm sure or more), would it be possible to buy a whole state, like Maryland, or Pennsylvania, for example? Or even a city? Is this legal?

Not really. Most states have some area set aside as government property and the government does not (or very rarely) sell their property. However, if you could convince the government of the state, the federal government, the local governments and all the people in the state who own property to sell you their land, yes, you could technically buy a state. However, you will never have enough money to do so Rhode Island, the smallest state, had an assessed value of over $73 billion in 1999. This is more than the richest man in the world has. Also, this is assessed value, which is usually lower than market value (the amount you would have to pay for the property on the market), so figure you probably would need closer to $100 billion for Rhode Island.
