Question

Gum Tree scams - or not?

Hello, I posted an ad about selling my laptop and I got an email from someone saying that they'd like to buy it if I could ship it to their husband in Malaysia. They couldn't pick up the item themselves coz they're not in the UK. The WEIRD thing is that they offered about £160 ABOVE the price I advertised the laptop for, claiming that it is to cover the shipping expenses. Now, it already sounded weird to me, but I agreed to do it so I told them they can do a paypal payment and all they have to do is pay to the email address I was writing for. I was expecting them to get back to me and ask for lots of details for them to do a proper scam - like address, password, account number etc. But they didn't!!! All they asked me was to send them a paypal request. I haven't sent them the request yet. I'm still pondering.... Sooooo is this a scam or not????? What am I risking? I assume I'm not risking anything by sending them a paypal request?

I have heard of a lot of scams that start with offering to send you more than you asked for. They never end well. I do not think it is worth the risk.

I have heard of money being paid into paypal and the person then claiming it was broken or didn't arrive, and looking for paypal to give their money back. By then you have no money and no laptop either. Laptops can't be so expensive in Malaysia that they would save more than £160 by buying from you. Avoid, and stay safe.
