Question

Do I need a work permit or green card to buy a condo/house?

I’m really interested in buying a condo/house however I’m not sure if I have all the requirements. I have lived in the U.S. for more than 8 years; I have a social security number, driver’s license, and almost 2 years working at a non-for profit organization, I have claimed taxes for the last 4 years. I have had a work permit in the past it’s just that my case has been denied and I’m not able to renew until I appeal for it. I have gone through different brokers, realtors, some of them say at least I need to have the work permit card physically and others say as long as I have a reasonable income and driver’s license along with credit history I can do it. I don’t know who to believe. The point is that in case I CAN buy without having those 2 cards then it will be wonderful! Today I just checked with Coldwell Banker and a guy advised I could buy it’s just that I have to fill out a little bit of different paperwork that is for non-residents. I’m aware I do not qualify for FHA but it will still don’t matter. I just need someone experienced and wise in this field to advice if I could buy or not. Please only reply if you are sure and if you do have knowledge in the field. Thank you.

If I was you, I'd stop talking to real estate agents and start talking to lenders. Call a couple banks (Coldwell Banker does have a mortgage company) and ask them what they require. One lender where I worked required underwriting review of your visa, and that you would qualify in all the other ways too, like income, credit score & history, assets, debt ratios. Another one additionally required that you had a relationship of at least 2 years with the bank, and that you had an average balance of $100k.
