I lost mine and the only thing I found out you can do is go to a Social Security office and request a new one... you only need a picture ID

Do you have any old tax forms? You will have to go get a new one from your local social security office. Its free though.

Crazy, I just found a social Security card...?

To get a job they have to have an original of your SS card - they need to make a copy of it to attach to the I9 form (proof of identity). You cannot apply for a new SS card through the mail or online. You have to take your photo ID and your birth certificate to the SS office and they can help you. When you apply, they will give you a paper saying you requested a new card. Sometimes a new employer will accept this until your replacement comes in - which has to come through the mail (normally 6 to 12 weeks).

When I was laid off about 5 years ago, and called a temp agency for in-between work, they told me to bring my Social Security card. That's when I found out I didn't have it. The remedy was much easier than I expected. Look for the nearest office online or in a phone book. Go there with your driver's license or state ID. They'll get you a new one. They told me it would be some amount of time, but it was just a few days, and I thought I paid a small fee, but don't remember anymore. I also can't remember if I needed my birth certificate. This is what happens when you get old...terminal CRS. If you have it, it certainly won't hurt. Take it to be safe. Anytime you deal with government agencies, take everything you can think of so you don't have to leave empty handed. You don't need your number, but if you've paid taxes or gotten a pay check ever, it's there. I did find some dead relative's numbers online several years ago, but we weren't quite as protective of those numbers then. It was my college ID number and my driver's license number in years past.

Just visit your local security office and take ID with you. Memorize your number. You'll need it many times in your life and you shouldn't carry it around with you
