Question

A hourly wage for babysitting?

Hey I'm 15 years old and I babysit my step- brother while my step mother is at work from 7:30 a.m. until about 7:00 p.m. I bring him to the pool in town when we live about 30 miles from town and little trips like that. She is willing to pay I think whatever, but I want to know a fair deal an hour. Maybe 5 an hour or something? I don't know. What do you think?

$2 to $5 an hour, depending on your parents financial situation and if they're paying for (or paying you back) for transportation or entrace fees to different places. My 4yr-old son goes to daycare while I work (40-50hrs a week). I pay $130/wk which is about $3.50/hr for 40 hours (this is the cheapest local daycare I could find). If your step mother is having you babysit to save money on daycare don't ask for more than $3.50 - otherwise you're not saving her any money and she'd be better of putting your bro in daycare. If money isn't a big deal and your babysitting mostly for your own earnings then ask for as much as $5. Also, if your brother is 5 or older you won't get as much as if he were still a baby. To get an idea of what child care in your area costs just call some daycare centers in the phone book and ask how much it costs for full time day care for a child your brother's age. You can let your step mom know the rates and work something out w/ her from there.
