Is delivering door to door fliers the best way to advertise your painting business? Is picking up FAX numbers from white pages and faxing fliers a good idea? How to target the best area? What other options are there? Thank you very much!

1. The best way to promote your painting business is by networking - meeting prospective customers and through word-of-mouth. Have business cards printed up, give all your friends and relatives a few and ask for their help. Pick houses that obviously need exterior painting and introduce your self. Leave your business card. Give everyone you meet or talk to TWO business cards, explaining that that way they will have one to hand out to someone who may be interested in your painting services. 2. Fliers will work as a follow up in the areas you have met people. You could try a limited time special offer. 3, Do NOT use fax numbers. People find unsolicited faxes intrusive. You are using their paper and (expensive) fax supplies. 4. To select an area to target, drive the neighbourhoods and note houses or businesses that need exterior painting. Older neighbourhoods almost always have houses that need either interior or exterior painting. As I mentioned above, introduce yourself and leave a business card. If you have a flyer with a special offer, leave that as well. 5. Place a "business card" size ad in the classified ads section of the community paper. Many have service directories that are very inexpensive. Be prepared to keep the ad in the paper for several weeks. 6. People almost always will look for a service or product on Google before they look in any other place. Set up a website, a free blog will do, outlining your services, show pictures. List this on as many directories (local or otherwise) and be sure to emphasize your local area. List your business on Google local business, including your website address. You want to appear on the first page when someone searches for a handyman in your local area. Use Google Insights (www.google.com/insights/) to identify the best keywords (don't worry if you are in a small community - use the largest city near you, instead). 7. Once you've finished a job, ask that customer for a referral to someone they know who may need your services. Make sure they have a few of your business cards.

One of the best ways is to advertise online. People are on there all the time looking for services and products! One small company I've heard of is called Premiere Ads Online and they will do all the work of advertising for you on several different classified ads websites. They don't charge a lot so it really is worth it if you are too busy to do it yourself. I think it starts at about $15 for your ad to be listed for 1 month.Cheaper than the newspaper!
