Why can companys say something works when it doesn't?

ok, so everytime i see a comercial, where the company is trying to advertise their product, and then later down the road i search it on the computer to find out if it works, and almost everyone says it does not work, what i want to know is why these companys are aloud to steal your money, and there product does not work, i saw an ad for mederma, and i figuired ok, i have really bad stretch marks i would like to get rid of, and on the comercial they show all these fake pictures of people with scars, and then they show the after pictures and the scars are completely gone but then i searched in on google and all these people are saying it doesn't work, and the only way to get rid of them is surgery, well i would just like to know why theses people get paid when all they do is lie to you and give you something that does not work, i just want to know why it is legal for them to do that, if thats the case, then i guess i can take grape jelly and mix it with baby powder, and put in in a tube and become a millionaire
