San Diego is far more reasonable - try craigslist for an idea of rents.

San Diego is much more reasonable-I'm not sure if the word "cheap" is applicable in either cities. Depending on what you're looking for there are a lot of reasonably priced condos/apts to rent in major areas in SD such as La Jolla UTC or Mission Valley. You can look in east county or south bay if you want "cheap"

It is very easy to live in S.F. without a car. If I did not have a lot of money and/or I was just starting out in life, I would *only* live in a city that was walking friendly. It's much much cheaper in the long run. I'm not anti-car, but cars are expensive and you can't live in Southern California without a car. End of story.
