Question
Social Security disability medicare question?
My husband has just received his first social security disability payment- I think it is back pay for 6-12 months (not sure since we have not yet received the approval notice, the deposit just showed up in his account today). He has been on long term disability through his work for over a year now & we have been paying COBRA - $600.00 per month for 14 months. We have 4 more months of COBRA eligibility & then will have no health insurance. My company does not offer. His doctor bills & prescriptions will cost more than the $600.00 per month once Cobra ends. My question is when does medicare start covering him? He is only 58 right now. Please don't answer if you don't know- & I have looked at the web sites- I am just trying to confirm what it looks like to me. Thanks! The 2 answers so far are total spam- which is exactly what I didn't want.

Hi beverly, If you just received a payment, the only way it is retro is from the date disability is determined. you need your notice to find out. You are aware of the five full calendar month waiting period that is not a delay, and you get nothing for it. it works like this. I got my notice in january that i was determined disabled on December 10, 2008, the date they sent me to the last doctor. so December does not count. Jan, feb, mar, apr, may, Eligibility begins in june, with payments beginning in July for me. No back-pay, just my regular monthly benefit. now my application for soc sec disability was also an application for medicaid, which I was quickly denied because of my wife's income lucky for me, my disability is not expensive to maintain, just repair. very correctable with surgery, but until I get it, I am just legally blind with no real expenses. Try calling your local soc sec office and make an appointment to go see them. They should be able to help make it all clear real quick(well quick for a govt office) God bless you and your husband, I hope i helped a little. there are other things I could share, e-mil me if you are interested, but I do not wish to share with the entire community. I am sure you understand. Get the Redbook. Mine is 2006, and I do not know if there is a mor recent. I read every page and I never saw anything about a two year wait for medical assistance.

Seems to me he wouldn't be eligible unless he has been receiving SSNI for 24 months unless his disability is Lou Gehrig's Disease or ESRD.

It depends how long that SS has determined him to be disabled. My understanding is that there is a 2 year wait before medicare eligibility. so say SS determined he was disable as of 1/01/09, then he would not be eligible till 1/1/11. 1-800-633-4227 this is the number for medicare; it will ask for his medicare number which is his social security number then ask for his letters that they use on his medicare card. since he will not have this, just type in his social. i called the other day and after a few prompts was lucky to be transferred to an operator who then put me on hold for no more than 10 minutes i believe. i truly expected to be on hold for at least an hour and put it on speaker phone. they were very polite and answered my questions. there is a medicare booklet that i downloaded to my word documents as a reference in the future. it is over 128 pages long. they also have a FAQ section that may answer your questions. but you have one more problem and that is his RX, which i guess is at least 1/2 or more of your total costs. you will need to get part D for his RX. most states, you just log in and they will give you a listing of what companies can insure him. i have heard that you can call and ask if they can find a company that specifically will pay for his drugs. some companies may cover some but not others. you will need to have ready the names of the drugs, dosages and amounts. also; check out the AARP www ... this is the link; read the articles ref social security and especially the part D Medicare regarding help on RX. if you have not signed up for AARP, it only costs $29 per year and believe me it is a bargain. only requirement is that 1 person is age 50 or older. but i think you will be able to access these w/out the membership. good luck

Medicare benefits would be available 2 years after the established on-set date. If your husband's on-set date was January 15,2009 he would be eligible for medicare January 15, 2011. The on-set date is when they established the disability began, not when Social Security disability started. It could well be that SS determined that your husbands disability began much earlier. What I mean here is that your husband could have been disabled and collected disability from either his employer or state for some time before his disability was approved by the Social Security administration, this could push his on-set date back to where medicare eligibility would be fairly close. Edit: I think Lucy is saying the same thing as I just did, your husband is eligible for medicare 2 years after the onset date, not 2 years after filing for disability.

Medicare starts when he becomes eligible for SSDI. There's a 27 month wait, from the time the disability sets in, until it becomes SSDI eligible. SO, If you've got back pay for 12 months, he's been disabled at least three years??? I think the timeframe is off, OR, he didn't get 12 months back benefits.

Okay, I work in a doctor office in California from my experience with insurance medicare something you get when you turn 65. There have been some cases where say you have medicare and you also have a mentally disabled child they could also be put on medicare from the time you get it (at 65) and have it even after your die. You could tell those patients from the rest because there medicare card has the letter (T) at the end of the SSN rather than the usual (AorB) so he has a while to go until medicare. If he was injured at work he should be covered under work comp for that injury even when he is retired they should cover it. That would include medications dr. visits and physical therapy. At least that's how it works in my area I understand you are in Nashville, if I remember correctly. Even so I don't think it would be much different. Hope this helps you.

Unfortunately Lucy is correct as the couple of others after her - I don't know why your husband is on SS my mom is unable to work because of her cancer currently and and luckily (well sort of) I have found a screening program that covers her cancer treatments - if that is your situation search you state trauma centers they would likely be getting the grant monies but almost keep them hidden and once you get them approved for the government medical it is horrible finding a decent dr who will accept it. God help us all once Washington takes over everything we are all screwed. Beverly if you are comfortable sending the nature of his issue and your state - I am willing to do a bit of research for you to see what I can find - I can be emailed. :) All the best :)

When my mom went on SSDI she was ineligible for medicare because she was too young. However she qualified for medicaid. Not sure if your husband would qualify but it is worth looking into.

I am on social security disability and my medicare finally kicked in exactly two years to the month after I was declared disabled by the SSA.

Go to socialsecurity.gov He will automatically get medicare and will be able to get a suplementary insurance for prescriptions. When you get a formal letter from social security it will all be in there.
