Question

What are my rights as a home renter in QLD?

My Girlfriend and i rent a unit in Brisbane, we are both shift workers and at the moment our neighbours are doing some damn noisy renovations. It's all during the day, but that's when we sleep! The real estate contacted us today saying they need access to our unit (as it's the only one with a man hole access) to do electrical work in the roof. I said No, but she said they have every right to just come on in if they give us 24 hours notice. I asked how long these renovations are supposed to be taking and she said she didn't know exactly but assumed it would be a few weeks!!! WE want out of here!!! I know we can cancel the lease, but then we're up for who knows what sort of charges, is there any kind of way around this because WE NEED SLEEP and we can't get it here!!

Hi, the link above is a good link. You are absolutely right you are able to have the lease cancelled under the provision that these renovations are disturbing your peace. You should contact the residential tenancy tribunal as you may be able to come to an agreement where they will give you a discount on your rent. In regards to the noise this is a little more difficult. You really do need to contact the residential tenancy Authority and get some sound advice from them.
