Question
How do I build credit without a credit card?
Okay--I just checked my credit report and have 3 medical bills that have been turned over to collections. I was young (18,19) and know that the bottom line is they should have been paid. However, they weren't and altogether, they are around $900. Other than those "potentially negative" accounts, I have no credit. Now that I am older and trying to get a place of my own and all of that jazz, I can't. I can't even think about a mortgage or anything. So, I am trying to build my credit up and need some advice how. My Dad tells me to go to a jewelry store, making sure they do credit reporting, and buy something to make monthly payments on. That sounds good, but is that really going to help? I also have paid off two grave plots, but just now learned that the cemetery doesn't do credit reporting, so I am trying to go back and report those which is a hassle and a half! Anyway--any help would be awesome!

you could apply for a loan at a bank. applying for credit cards is probably your best bet. You should be able to get something even if you have never had one before. typically they will give you a small credit line like $500 If you have not payed the doctors bills then I would start there first so everything is taken care of.

You do not necessarily need a credit card to build credit. All this hoopla about credit is what got us into this economic mess in the first place. I think what you need to do first is pay that debt and them ask the creditors to reported on your credits report that you paid out the debt. If you can try getting a used car and pay it in monthly installments. It will appear in your credit report. The name of your car dealership or company that you are paying the installments. As long as you are paying you bill on time you start to build your credit or what I call sense of responsibility. All a credit report is nothing more than a track record of how seriously and responsible you are about paying your bills on time.
