Question
Is the COBRA Enhancement available for those who were on disability leave?
I am off work for a disability that prevents me from driving. The company I work for, a trucking company, has stopped paying their share of the health insurance for me. I am now left with a $600/month bill, which seeing how I am not working, I cannot afford. Would I be better off having the company lay me off and go on COBRA and try for the enhancement. I understand that losing your job due to illness disqualifies from the government assistance program. Anyone have any experience with this?

COBRA is expensive too. You can read the FAQ on COBRA coverage at the Department of Labor web site www ... to see if you would qualify and where to find information on the costs, etc. Is this a permanent disability or temporary? You can apply for disability or temporary disability for assistance. You don't mention your state, but you can google "State + disability insurance" to see what other options you may have.

my suggestion if you dont qualify for the cobra enhancement to pay that $600, no matter how you come up with the money. with disability, you may not qualify for any health insurance due to a pre-existing condition. even if you went to a high risk pool in your state, the premiums could be as much or maybe more than $600. the other question is? will your company lay you off? good luck
