Question
Is it possible to ruin your credit at the age of 17?
I got a free 10 day pass to Renaissance spa and resort, the guy that was helping me when I first went in there lied and told me that I had to sign something to be able to use the Spa that day since I didn't have Identification. It turned out it was a contract saying I would get membership with them. Well I only went that ONE day, and I am ONLY 17 years old, and now I have creditors calling me and trying to collect the debt of $1,200. I explained that they couldn't do that since I'm only 17 and my parent/guardians didn't sign for me, it was the Spa's responsibility to make sure I was overage, Is it legal what their doing?

They havent got a leg to stand on, thats disgraceful, you should write to them and tell them you will take court action unless they stop harrassing you. Explain in the letter that you only spent 1 day there and as you are 17 you had no idea what you were signing. If you go to court the judge will take pity on you as you are way young and will see that they are scamming you. Dont leave it till the bailiffs come to knock on your door, write them a letter now.

No, you cannot legally sign contracts at 17! They cant do anything to you. I dont even think you can have credit at all for that age so i would talk to someone in the legal department (like a friend thats a lawyer or something? maybe call the place and explain?) and find out what you can do to stop the calls!

you should talk to your parents and call the spa to talk about the misunderstanding. if that doesn't work, maybe you should talk to your parents' lawyer. i hope everything works out for you.

Remember to read whatever your signing at least two times to fully grasp it and then check for fine print.

in most states, you can not be held to a contract entered into while you are only 17. and, you're going to have to prove your case. which means you have to tell your parents. the rule is that you must read everything you are asked to sign. if there is anything you do not understand, don't sign. this rule about contracts will be strictly enforced as soon as you are 18, so you'd best start practicing now.

Well sucks for you; if it were me I would have read everything clearly that I'm signing. Only a asshole would do something like that. NO OFFENSE to you.

yes it is illegally for what they are doing. they falsely got you to signed a contract that you were unaware. they deceived you. go speak to a solicitor who will stop this action against your person. or explain to the company that you were there on a free membership for ten days. and they have made a mistake. if they don.t change this then say you will send your company a letter from your council.

Send them a letter via Certified Mail + Return Receipt (do not use regular mail) stating: Per the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, I am requesting written validation that I was of legal age (18) when this alleged contract was signed. ------------------------------------------------------------------- * Do not sign your signature on any document that you mail to a debt collector.Simply type your full name.

No. File it with the Better Business Bureau. If you know that you are not an adult, why are you putting yourself in the position of being mistaken for one. You knew that you didn't have an ID and you knew that some kind of cost was involved. You have to take some responsibility for your behavior. As a consumer, never, never sign anything that you don't read. Read to make sure that what is being said to you is what you are signing. Know what you can and can not sign based on your age and other circumstances. Do not be so overwhelmed wit what you are getting that you fail to do the above. There is no such thing as free. You usually wind up paying for it some kind of way. You are paying right now whether it is illegal or not. Things that are supposed to happen often don't when it comes to legal issues therefore whether you want to or not, you have to go back to you parents and let them know what you have done, suffer the humiliation of them considering you to be irresponsible , which you have shown and know that in your behalf, they have a new problem that they and you, could have done without. Did you read your "10 day pass'? Do you still have it? That will help much. Did you misrepresent yourself to them? (that is going to be their argument) Did you recieve the services or additional services according to your pass? Truth is Advertisement is an old game to make money as B. T. Bailey said "There is a sucker born evry minute". Your explanation to them "carries no weight". Will you please get a responsible adult involved in this mess that you have made. I am sorry if this response sounds cold but adulthood is often "chilly".
