Question
Input for a business idea?
I need some unbiased input for a business opportunity. I am thinking about starting a home inventory business where I would come to a clients home, inventory and document all of the items they consider valuable and provide said client with a printed and an electronic report. This would be used in the event that a natural disaster, fire, or theft were to occur. I would be licensed, bonded, and insured. If one of these events were to occur, would the average person be able to accurately describe the item(s) and remember the price for each missing or damaged item? I would provide a contract that included a confidentiality agreement and all client information would be processed on an offline computer(never connected to the internet) and once the end product was delivered to the client, their information would be destroyed unless they requested a copy be kept in a safe deposit box at a bank. Please provide honest feedback. This will be based in the metro Detroit, Mi. area, but any input would be greatly appreciated! additional information...I found some software that puts all of this information into a neat, tidy report. I allows for the appraisel value to be entered, if the client has it available. I would not attempt to provide this to the client, rather advise them to find someone who could. I would only be recording model numbers, serial numbers(if available), a breif description, a a digital picture(which would be included on the printed report and the CD.

Video tape the contents as a start . Then you can make your list and ask the client to provide the details. Perhaps during the taping you could ask questions about the items and get a lot of the information that way. Getting the particulars about how a customer's insurance policy would base the value on objects before you start would be helpful. Some pay replacement costs some pay for the depreciated costs. Some will not pay for anything below the main floor level. Then you can determine what is most important to record for the individual client. Age , original cost ,expected lifespan, resale value , etc. Also check if there are additional riders for items not generally covered. Maybe a questionnaire that the customer could fill out before you start would help you know before you arrive what information you need to focus on for them . Think about being a professional and knowledgeable about what you are doing to give the best impression. Maybe try making a brochure that describes your service and making additions until everything is covered would be a help.

If nobody has this before, it might be a good idea. However, it would seem easier if you could create your own software and get in on the web with your own URL but make it something clients have to pay for. The idea of a stranger coming into my house to see my valuables makes me feel uncomfortable.
