Question

Do I leave home, school and pursue my business?

I had an idea for a business my junior year in college. Then I met some friends that had entrepreneurial spirit like myself and we talked about starting the business up. In that summer I got a job as a Sales Manager for advertisement space in a magazine. I broke the national record in sales. I did it in half the time that was given to me to finish the sales. Before that I worked at Microsoft and was one of the top marketing reps in the nation. Using that experience and motivation, I got my two friends on board and we wrote a 52 page business plan with financial documents. End result: 1 million dollars in projected revenue with a 30 percent profit margin at the end of the year. We need 75 grand to make this happen. I've been pitching investors left and right and it looks like that money should be coming in. If we can make the first year successful, then it'd be time to use my sales skills to pitch venture capitalists so we can get a 15 million dollar investment to spread nationally. Then our revenues go up in the 100 millions. We have two and a half months to get the site finished, take care of legal matters, build content, take care of distribution, create advertisements and have focus groups for our website and advertisements. I have my hands full. Now here's the problem: I'm a math major and last semester was supposed to be my last. I go to a pretty hard school and I was taking 6 classes while doing all the stuff for my business. I ended up failing two of my classes and getting a D in one of them. I need to take two summer classes (5/26/09 to 8/12/09) and one more class over the next fall semester to finish. The classes are all night classes, but keep in mind they're all proof writing classes that have a 50% fail rate and are intense. Moreover, I have a great idea and I want to pursue it. I found a way to be faster and 90% cheaper than my competitors. I HIT A GOD DAMN GOLD MINE! But do I finish school for the hell of it? Do I just get the degree for kicks? MY PARENTS ARE GOING NUTS ON ME. I'm living at home and all they do is complain. They want me to not do anything for the business until I'm done with my classes. I'm fed up with them and with school. I want some advice. I know it's just three more classes, but something I hate even more than my parents nagging me, is the fact that people will think that I'm a successful businessman because of my education. My education had nothing to do with anything. I learned everything from my internships, talking to successful CEOs, talking to my potential customers and doing a lot of reading outside of the classroom. And don't say that a degree makes people take you seriously. People take you seriously if you want them to take you seriously.

When did Berny Madoff wave his degree under the noses of his investors? NEVER - nobody but you will ever know, and I might add, care. When you show people you know how to make money, and are willing to let them make some also, the worlds' your oyster. But of course your parents are shortsighted, and don't know who you are and what you're capable of. You must follow your dream, and if you fail - guess what - schools always there. Make a deal with your folks, if you can't get your dreams off the runway in 6 or 9 months, you'll pack up and head out and take the first job or go back to school. We only learn how to succeed when we allow ourselves to fail. Go with your force.

Well in a situation like this, In my opinion, you are not asking a question with any correct or incorrect answer. More like an opinion poll with you already having your mind made up. If you are willing to quit on school, what is the guarantee you won't quit on your business plan? Are you staying at home for free? When you quit school can you still stay at home? It sounds like you are a very very smart and motivated young man. The time it will require for you to finish your studies imo is too short to be an obstacle. Why not talk to some of those successful ceo's now rather than us on yahoo? I think it's important that you find someone whom you respect, and then pose the question to them. The gold mine has yet to be discovered, although it certainly sounds like you have the enthusiasm to be a perfect pitch man. btw, be prepared to give a very significant amount of control to both your early investors, followed by more concessions for the national rollout. Now, GO DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!!
