Question

Workplace bullying. can i get help without massive expense?

I have recently resigned from my job because of a rumor made up about me and and a married co-worker having an affair. It seems to have stemmed from one person in particular who is my superior and has a history of harassing people who she feels (for whatever strange reason) threatened by. She is physically much bigger than me and the situation at work had built up to the extent where i was so intimidated and bullied by several staff members that i quickly scrawled a resignation letter and raced out the door... i had previously complained about the situation to my managers and it was not documented. Although i thought i was a union member, upon contacting them found out i was not not on their system. Does anyone know what my options are as i tried to withdraw my resignation and was virtually told i was the trouble maker, who broke a contract by not giving sufficient notice before my departure. I simply have not done anything wrong, my complaints were ignored and the workplace became untenable. I need help!

What do you need help to do? Do you want your job back? If you have written a letter of resignation and left without serving any notice period, I think you have to accept that in this respect they are correct and would not be under any obligation to you at all. Unfortunately, this seems to be the only documented piece of history. You say you complained to your managers, but it was not documented. Did you not complain in writing or only verbally? How do you know it was not documented? You thought you were a member of the union, but you are not on their system. Have you no record of paying any union dues? If what you say is correct, you are a victim of constructive dismissal i.e. you have been put in a situation where you had no other choice but to leave due to your employer's conduct. I'm not sure how your resignation, coupled with the lack of proof that you had complained about your treatment will affect your chances of taking them to court, but suggest you talk to a lawyer asap to find out if you have a realistic chance of taking this further. Some solicitors offer an initial (1/2 hour) consultation free of charge.

If your company has an HR department I suggest you contact them and give them specific refernce to what has happened. They could help, also your company has a union, go to that representative for assistance on harassment.
