Question
Foreclosure and fines relating to it. Unfinished Remodel?
I have a co-worker that is in the process of having her condo foreclosed on. She doesn't know when it will happen but has been given the time frame of any day now to 3 months. I recently went over to her place to buy some furniture she is trying to sell and saw that she had some remodeling done that is unfinished. Myself, who used to do contracting work noticed that the electrical part of it was not to code in this county. She is not planning on finishing this remodel, unless she would be paying more in fines then she would be paying to have it covered up. She is wondering if there will be additional fines for not having this island fixed up and at least the code violations covered up. Thanks in advance for any advice you could give me. IL, Cook County

Illinois and especially Cook County is extremely busy. It will probably be a while because there are many cases out there. It can take up to 6 months depending on the judge. The main thing is that when the foreclosure is finished the property will no longer belong to her so anyway unless there is some way these violations will be found out prior to the foreclosure she should not be effected. Chances are once the foreclosure is finalized it the new owner will finish it or at least bring it up to code in order to repair it.
