Free sites don't get the "weight" that most domains get - the search engines know that they are used by those making (usually) personal and spam sites. They will almost never compete with a real one-off domain name. I say almost because, it is possible for a free site to be ranked #1 - assuming it's the only site on the planet with a particular term. In the end, if you want a site to get noticed by people and give it some credibility, pony up the whole $20 a year it takes to buy a domain name and a hosting package. Your best bet is by far to create a WordPress blog for yourself at wordpress ... You have to host your site there, but their site is well integrated for Search Engine Optimization. It's a good place to start. After that, I'd switch to my own hosting account so you can run ads and scripts and such to make money. I learned pretty much everything I know to run my own online sites with Word Press at short ... Check it out.
