Question
Question about North American consumers?
Hi, this is just some piece of information that i need to my project. My question is, in general, are American consumers/customers more likely to buy (in the home improvement sector: --> furniture, rebuilding, maintenance, painting, screwdrivers, builder contractors, etc...) My question is for these things, are Americans more likely to buy it from a well-known international brand, or would they prefer a local, less-quality, and cheaper brand? And what if price and quality were the same, would Americans buy it from the internationally known and famous brand name, or from the local one? thx. (If you can also provide me with this information for consumers in Canada and Mexico, that would be helpful too)

Are you suggesting that, in general, a well-known international brand is superior to a local brand? I don't really know the answer to your question. I don't have any stats on it or anything. Based on people I know, mostly from the US, I'd say people buy those things from the home improvement sector in fairly = amounts. They're not really mutually exclusive; it's not like people are like "hmmm... should I buy a screwdriver, a new couch, or a couple cans of paint?" They buy them all, at different times. They're all kind of once-in-a-while types of purchases, though -It's not like people buy that stuff every day. It depends on the type of product you're buying, but I think that for home-improvement products, most people from the US would go with the more well-known, higher quality, international brand. I don't know, it also probably varies by demographic. If the price and quality were the same, I don't know. It's true that there are a lot of stereotypes around here that US makes crappy products. But then there is another train of thought that it's patriotic to buy US-made things. It also depends what country the products are from. Mexico and China get bad reps. As far as cars and electronics, Japan has a very good reputation. I have no idea about home improvement. Lots of people by from Ikea, which I think is Swedish, although I have to say the products are cheap and not so high-quality. They have nice looking things, though. If you really want to know, you should do a scientific survey about it.

Most Americans don't see value in whether a brand is international or not, they are just concerned about whether the brand has value in America. As far as whether Americans prefer more expensive, name-brand items, vs. cheaper no-name items, it is probably half and half. People who can afford big brands probably prefer them, but people who have less money will go the cheaper/local route. This is probably true in any country - brands always have a price premium, and most people consider how a brand is perceived in their own country when deciding when to purchase - they are less likely to know/care whether a brand is international.
