Can I obtain a mailing list from the county office for free? (or close to it?)?

Question

I'm checking out the possibility of starting a direct mail "coupon catalog" in Chatham County, NC. Do I have to pay for a list, or can I get one from the county for free? I'm looking for a general answer.. Don't let the Chatham County thing fool you. If you know of a county in the US that's giving lists, let me know!

You can ask the county clerk but it is unlkely they make their information freely available. I would like to think a government agency would not release citizen's private information to anyone who asks for it. If you want a "free mailing list" use the phone book. You'll have to do some typing, but you get what you pay for.
