Question

CA Unemployment Insurance and starting college?

I've been on unemployment now since the end of January. I decided instead of working another dead end job, I would start at my local community college and start getting the education I need to make big bucks someday. I would like to start doing the summer semester that starts the end of May so I can freshen up my study habits before fall. I did the FAFSA forms for the summer and fall semesters, although I will probably not get any funding for summer. I was admitted to college and I am ready to register for my classes and go to school. My issue is, when I check that box on my unemployment that 'I began to attend any kind of school or training', will they cut off my benefits entirely? I read in my unemployment guide and read on their website that you can get training benefits, but it seems that they want you to do a specific pre-approved trade (attending school full-time), not just attend college. They don't offer full-time in the summer anyways! I won't know until I get the phone interview with EDD. I will not be getting federal aid for the summer so I will not be able to afford living this summer without my unemployment benefits. Does anyone know if they will stop paying my benefits because I am doing 3-4 units of community college in the summer without any federal aid, scholarships or grants? Or, do I have to skip summer classes just so I can eat!?!?!? Ugh!

~~Great choices they leave you right? It works like this. With CA UI, you have to be available to work the hours you previously worked prior to being laid off or fired. Therefore, if you worked day hours, and went to school during the day, this would disqualify you for benefits. If you take night classes, then it would not prevent you from receiving UI. Of course, being in school still makes you have to keep your applications for possible jobs going just as you did before entering school. It is required that you actively search for employment in the same wage, hours, and days, you previously worked in.~~
