Question
How do I start my own jewelry-making business?
I'm 19 years old, and only have a high school education. I have a steady desk job. I've recently picked up working with polymer clay, metals, beads, and things, and started making jewelry. I made gifts for my family, and they said I should open my own business. At first, I just shrugged it off, but more compliments kept coming my way, and now I want to figure out how I would go about creating my own business of making, promoting, and distributing my handmade jewelry, and taking in custom orders. Can anyone give me some advice, or any opinion at all? I wouldn't even know the first thing on how to start this, or what I'd be in for. I think I'd want some sort of online shop as well. (Not Etsy, though...) Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!!

First you'll want to make a business plan in order to figure out the start up costs as well as costs to maintain the business. You'll also want to figure out the strengths weakness opportunities and threats (SWOT analysis) so you're ready when certain situations arise. If you're wanting to sell online, hire a web page developer to help you make website. Also consider E-Bay for selling you products. You could host jewelry parties at your home and rely mainly on word of mouth and networking to get your name out there. Another idea is to send flyers in the mail to get your name out there, maybe attach a few coupons. Good luck!

It sounds like what you need is more advice than fit into this little box. If I were in your shoes I'd take the time to read everything I can get my hands on about running a small business. It's not for the faint-hearted. You can find lots of good info on-line. A good starting point would be websites that offer advice for small businesses. Hook-up with the peeps at the small business development center near you, they offer classes and workshops too. Later you can invest in a written guide that outlines the steps to starting a jewelery-making business. One where you can pencil-in notes on the side and underline important things you need to remember. It's really not that hard to start your own business. In fact the small business administration has programs to fund home-based businesses. See, I told you it's a lot of information for this little window, but if you check out brotobro ... you can find lots more tips on starting your own business.
