MySQL is the db of choice for most of the high traffic web sites and also any development done using the popular php-apache combine.So these companies have to register for support which might be a lucrative revenue generator.Also the DB could have been positioned to attract the low end businesses who could not afford the more expensive Oracle Db or the mainframes or Windows Servers.
