Fire Safety & Exit Strategies?

I had my apartment inspected and was given a notice to 'remove excersize equipment blocking window'. The equipment is in front of the window, but not blocking access to it. The peice is large and I will have to make arrangements to have it moved. I have read through the lease agreement and found no specification as to how much clearance a safety exit must have in order to be considered unobstructed. I'd like to prevent having to move it again. Does anyone know the actual clearance REQUIREMENT?
