Can a fixed bid contractor collect unemployment from me?
I had a contract with a freelance video editor to do a 3 day job. Our contract stated that he was to pay his own taxes and the project was fixed fee. 7 months later i find out i am the primary contributor to his unemployment claim. The future payout to him 3 times what the original contract was. This doesn't seem right. If it isn't what proof do i need to deliver? The documentation is very vague.

No, he has to be a W-2 employee. Not eligible

I also believe that Jwish is correct. Additionally, your contract with your subcontractor should be proof enough. (always make them sign it and keep it on file) If you file a UCT6 form with the State (which reports the payroll activity of your W-2 employees), you can use this as proof as well because the particular subcontractor's name would not be on the report. PS: I am in Florida and the UCT-6 may only be a Florida thing.
