Question
Why are the prices so high at pawn shops?
I have been in a few pawn shops, just poking around and wasting time. I have noticed that many of the used items for sale are listed at a new price or sometimes even more. Most of these items are something I am familiar with and know the prices. Is there some unwritten rule that you simply offer half that price or what? I mean, this stuff is used, usually WELL used. One thing I remember specifically was used VCRs. The pawn shop had all the regular VCRs priced $50 each and they had maybe 20. At that time you could buy one new for $40 plus tax at several places. One thing I wondered about was whether the pawn shop sold items on credit and therefore the price listed included a carrying charge?

Sometimes pawn shops burn themselves by paying more for an item than what they can really sell it for. If they do, its hard for them to admit their mistake and take their loss by reducing the price of an item to less than they paid for it. Pawn shops can be a good place to buy things, but just make sure you know what you want and how much its worth before you go in.
