Question

Generating tax form 940 and 941 from 1120?

I have 1120 only from Y2006 and my accountant passed away. IRS and some states are asking for quarterly and monthly tax forms that seem to have missed out. Is there any way to create 940/941 from 1120? Also any web forum to discuss such accounting questions is greatly appreciated.

I have prepared employment tax returns from other than payroll information in the past if there was no other way to do it, but it is not terribly accurate but may be as good as it is going to get. If you don't file and IRS files for you, the amount they will compute will probably be excessive so you should do as much as possible to zero in on an accurate amount. Using wages on an 1120 may produce a close estimate but there are better ways to do it. Some research into other records is in order before putting an employment return together.

No. You'll have to retrieve the "books" in order to obtain the info to complete 940 and 941 as well as any needed state filings. Even if the accountant passed away, you should be able to get copies of all your accounting and tax records.

There's no way to figure those from the 1120. You'll have to contact your former accountant's family or estate to get copies of his records. Someone most likely picked up his tax practice and they would have those records. His family or the executor of the estate would know where his records are.

Unfortunately you need payroll records for those forms and that information isn't on the 1120. The 941's are quarterly payroll tax returns and the 940 is the annual federal unemployment return. Who processed and maintained the payroll records? Typically your accountant wouldn't be the one to process your payroll - someone in-house or a payroll company typically does that. Whoever has been doing payroll for you should have the needed information to recreate those returns.
