Question

I am a professional childcare provider. I do not know what is a fair rate to charge for odd hours.?

I have over 50 college credits in Early Childhood Education and I am still in school working on my BS in Elementary Education. I have worked for the past 5 years as a head teacher, assistant director/STARS coordinator, and most recently a Head Start teacher. That being said, I have always been paid by a childcare center/teaching facility. I recently decided to stay at home with my 2 young children and maybe keep a child or set of siblings out of my home. A nursing assistant has emailed me and would like to speak to me about watching her 3yro son. Her hours are very odd. Sometimes she works 3 12hr shifts a week and some weeks she works a couple 12 hr shifts and a couple 8hr shifts.. It varies monthly. The 12hr days she would need me from 7:30am-8pm. I really don't have a problem with the length of time, as I will be caring for him out of my home, but I don't know what is a fair price to charge? I was thinking around 200/week.. Is that to little or to much? I would be providing all meals. Any advice would be great.

I think that it depends a lot on where in the world you are, what sort of service you are offering, how old the child it etc. The average paid in the UK is GBP159 per week, however this is VERY variable. It is very easy to pitch your price low after which it is hard to get a raise. I suggest an opening offer of 20 to 30% more than you expect and then come down to close the deal. In the UK it is illegal to do what you are proposing, if you want to charge someone to look after their kids you have to become a registered child-minder and jump through a lot of hoops have insurance, be inspected and so on. You might want to check on the law in your part of the world.
