Employees are happy when they get a "good" performance appraisal (Distinguished, Commendable, Competent) and unhappy when they get a "bad" performance appraisal (Adequate, Marginal). They are only "motivated" to improve their performance when there will be some monetary benefit to them because of their performance appraisals. Example: It is required for promotion that on their last 2 performance appraisals the overall performance rating for each appraisal is "Distinguished". (Whatever the highest rating for the form being used is). Or They might lose their job if they do not improve. Note: New employees in my company receive a performance appraisal at the following intervals: 30 days, 60 days, 90 days, 6 months, 1 year. After 1 year, annually.
