Where can I find out if a business is real or not?

I Looked under the BBB already, and tried a reverse look up on the number. This man called a lady I take care of and sold her an alert system, he wanted her to pay monthly and pay a big fee up front.( I set one up with her alarm company for no monthly fee, and a one time small charge) I called to cancel and he didn't answer the phone as a company phone, more like a cell phone. I looked the name of the company up on the web and can't find it. I can't get much info on it at all.....
