Question

Do you think it is fair for rich people?

to have a tax break when they make more than $90,000 a year? If they make that much by February, is it right that they could pay less taxes than a poor person who makes $30,000 a year and has to pay taxes all year? Is it wrong for the democrats to want to raise taxes on the rich people so they can pay more to the government to fund programs to help the poor? Isn't that a more fair system than giving tax breaks to the wealthy so they can sit on their pile of cash and spend lavishly, while the poor can barely get by?

People in the top 5% of incomes already pay over half of the total income tax collected. The bottom 50% of wage earners pay less than 5% of the income taxes collected. Raise taxes on the "rich people"? That's a nice sound bite, but even if you took ALL of their income for tax, it wouldn't be enough to pay for all the promises. And how "fair" would that be, anyway? Most of the "poor", especially with kids, don't pay income tax at all under the current rules, and many actually get a refund they didn't pay in, in the form of EIC. Are there isolated instances where someone meets the scenario you paint? Probably so. Is that the norm. NO it isn't. A lot of people might be real surprised if the "Bush tax cuts for the rich" are allowed to expire, that it costs THEM money since they hardly consider themselves "rich". Are you suggesting that Bill Gates and Warren Buffet, for example, two of the very richest people around, should still have to pay taxes on the billions that they donate to charity rather than getting a deduction for it? Is that really fair? Remember that both of them started out as regular people, and EARNED their wealth.

Where did you get the ridiculous idea that capitalism has anything whatsoever to do with fairness?

Shouldn't raise their taxes, rich or poor. Even though they're wealthy, they have more spending (bigger house, cars, etc), so wouldn't be fair to raise their taxes just because they're well off. The United States wasted a lot of money and shouldn't have to try to gain some back from Rich people. Leaving the tax as it is, or tax breaks are fine because a 3% tax from 90,000 is $2700. Put yourself in their shoes also.
