Question

Do I qualify as a dependent for tax purposes?

I am 19, I study full time and do not work. I live with my mother, and she does not file any taxes because she does not work and does not have any income. We are both U.S. citizens living in USA. My dad is a non-american working in another country and providing financial support to us. Can I qualify as a dependent for federal and state tax purposes?

To qualify as a Qualified Child, you have to pass the following tests(I will mention if you qualify or not): Relationship - Yes Age - Yes Adobe - Yes Support - Yes Citizenship - Yes So YES you do qualify as a dependent. But the problem is that since your mom doesn't file a tax return, she can't claim you. And you dad doesn't work in the U.S so he is not subjected to pay taxes in the U.S and doesn't have to file for taxes in the U.S. So even though your parents can claim you as a dependent, there is not one filling a tax return to claim you. Hope it makes a lot more sense how the tax law works.

Whose return would your be claimed as a dependent on? Your mom doesn't work and your dad doesn't live here.

You qualify to be dependent of your mother. But since she does not file tax return, there is no benefit. For articles on your U.S. tax return, taxipay ...
