Answering machines generally do not have the same quality as a voice mail system nor do they generally offer multiple mailboxes and the flexibility a small business needs. Answering machines basically have only one advantage and that is cost. Purchasing one is very cheap. If it breaks you can dump it and buy another. Voice mail if used properly can be programmed to generate sales while a person is on hold. They also give you an appearance of a larger company. Most phone systems today have modules that can be purchased as add ons to expand your current phone system. Strangely Vonage with all their hype and the fact they sell business accounts do not give you the ability to have multiple mailboxes. If you can afford it I'd def opt for voice mail.

My vote would be for voice mail. It's more mobile and you're not dependent on the performance of a single machine (what if the answering machine breaks down while you're on vacation???).
