How hard is it for a small company to change webmasters, and what should I know about the process?
We are nearly invisible on the web, and I think we probably need a new webmaster. I've already researched search engine optimization and I'm convinced if our webmaster was worthwhile we would at least show up in some searches. Any suggestions are appreciated.

It takes time to rank well on the Web especially for competitive keywords. You did not indicate how long your site has been up and running But if you go to Google and even doing site:www.yourwebsiteURL.com command does not show up anything for your site, then something is really really wrong and I would change your webmaster as soon as possible. If you are not satisfied with the person, then it may be best to find a replacement. However, bear in mind the following: - the webmaster must give you all the files of your site (it's not uncommon to hear of disgruntled/fired out webmasters holding out some files of the site) - the webmaster must turn over the passwords to you for the site web hosting, FTP or anything else involved with the site. Once you fire the person, change all the passwords at once. - when you look for a new one, check out if the person has any SEO knowledge.

Being a webmaster and knowing SEO are not mutually exclusive. Most webmasters have absolutely no knowledge of SEO or what it takes to rank a website. The above information is correct, but bear in mind, SEO is a process that is applied to not only your websites pages but your relationships with other websites as well. Just maintaining a website is not going to make the site rank in search results.
