accept credit cards
Question
Bad/No Credit -- Credit Cards?
I'm 20 and trying to get my credit established. I think I MAY have some negatives due to a few hospital bills from last year while I had no insurance but I've heard that doesn't count as much as you'd think. I have applied for credit cards before, but it seems like I just can't find anyone who will accept me. Is there any hope? I don't need a huge credit limit, just something I can use (and pay off each month) to help my credit. Who should I try? Preferably not a secured credit card as I don't have extra cash to put up front!

Those hospital bills may hurt you more than you think they may. Reason I say that is, they still report to your credit, however it may or may not report to all of the agencies, making it harder to spot, which can make it even harder to build credit. So, I would definitely try to take care of those ASAP. As far as trying to find a CC out there, Orchard Bank's probably will be your best option, that's not a secured credit card. And there are some unsecured cards out there (First Premier, New Millenium, Tribute) that cater to people with bad credit. But there's a catch: the cards contain a lot of hidden fees that use up most of the available credit before the card is even sent out, making it a complete rip-off. You're better off with a secured card, because even though you have to put the money upfront as a deposit, at least you get that back at some point in time.

You could try store credit cards. Most of them use bank finance and it gets you on credit where the others can find you. Some times you can go into a store like Macy's or Sears and they beg you to buy something on their credit card, offering 10% off. Most of them are more interested in selling goods than the interest rates and may open a $300 dollar account on the spot. Also stores even let people pay their bills at the counter.

Orchard Bank is a good choice for getting started, just know that they tend to have substantial annual fees. If you don't want to go that route, the next best option is Department Stores and Gas Stations - it would be high interest, but they're usually more willing to give credit since you can only use it in one place. You said you're 20. Are you in college? If so, student credit cards are much easier to get than standard ones. Many of the larger banks have special student programs (First USA gave me a card when I had absolutely no credit history at all).
