Question

Copyright establishment?

Anyone care to give me a concise tutorial on how to copyright something? Spouse has small in home made to order sewing business, word of mouth clientele. Will be going to a website based business after a while. She has several apparel patterns of her own design. What does she need to do on her own to establish a copyright for them? She will handle all the printing and design portions, as well as the marketing. However, that first small step of getting the product copyrighted is what she is concerned about. By the numbers help? Thanks.

You can do this at the US Copyright Office: www ... www ... -- Visual Arts Registration The application is fairly simple & the cost is $45 per application. Despite what others state, a "poor man's" copyright is NOT the same as registering it. Here's what the US Copyright Office has to say: "The practice of sending a copy of your own work to yourself is sometimes called a 'poor man’s copyright.' There is no provision in the copyright law regarding any such type of protection, and it is not a substitute for registration." www ... – Link to above quote Definitely check out NOLO – a free informational site about many things legal. Here are 2 pages specific to copyrights: www ... -- NOLO's Copyright Resource Center www ... -- NOLO's Creative Arts & Music Resource Center Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

The best place to start is the US Copyright office. I've put a link below. Technically, your work is copyrighted (that is, protected as an original work) whether or not you register it. You only need to register if you plan on bringing a lawsuit against someone for copyright infringement. One thing that I know is NOT true. People may tell you that you can mail something to yourself and keep it unopened, with the expectation that the postmark will serve as a sort of copyright. This is not true. It is highly unlikely that it would stand up in a court of law. I hope this gives you a place to start. Good luck.
