Question

I need help with network system to install in a resturant?

basically I've been appointed damage control and handyman for a restaurant.... it needs a lot of help. my main concern right now is to install a network system with input terminals, ticket printers, credit card readers, cabling, and a nice database...... I'm capable of running the network configuration but I'm wonder what kind of software options do we have (besides micros and aloha) and what kind of hardware options (or suppliers) there are....

What type of resturant? How many patrons/seats? Do you want integrated book keeping or inventory tracking? What method of payments will be accepted? How many pay centers/cash machines will be used? Touchscreens? Quickservice (fastfood) or Full Service? Wait staff with mobile credit card readers? Digital order screen for cook staff? Depending on cost constraints, you may find that open source is the way to go. If you have access to someone with the tech knowhow for support. I like Sourceforge.net in terms of open source programs. Otherwise, there's always Microsoft XP Pro, a time tested fully supported platform which is not a cheap solution but is supported by Microsoft. There's always Quickbooks or Microsoft Dynamics. Out of the box you've got Dell which tailors specifically to POS solutions or you can build your own system piece by piece, I guess it would depend on your budget and starting point, as well as all the other questions which were asked at the beginning of this answer.

I would set up a secure wireless network throughout the restaurant. Use WEP encryption and limit the access to only certain MAC addresses and fixed IP addresses assigned to those MAC addresses. This will not only encrypt you but make it extremely difficult for anyone else to access the network. Make access to the wireless router administration functions only by wired systems, not wireless. Be sure to keep a list of all the MAC addresses and corresponding IP addresses and encryption key locked up in a safe. Then set up a freebie network on a different frequency so your customers may have internet access also.
