Question

In search for good farmland?

I am currently living in California (Sunnyvale) and Ohio (Youngstown) equal amount of time at each place. I have money to invest for my retirement in next 15-20 years. My idea is to buy a good farmland for myself. I am justing starting my search and have no idea how much it would cost. 1. I want farmland to have access to irrigation. 2. Preferable good weather. 3. My preference is Grain (Wheat, Corn) farming and not interested in wine etc. 4. Close to City. 5. Not very expensive and value for money. 6. Looking at prices at Bay area I assume that farmland in SF area will be expensive and yield on the farm would not be enough to justify the investment. 7. If possible I want to buy now and lease it until I am myself ready to move to the farmland. 8. Availability Water and Sun is essential. 9. Potential for Wind Power Harvesting and Solar is also desired. 10. No water table problem in the area. 11. Willing to consider Costa Rica as well. Any help in starting my search will be useful

THE RICHEST, most fertile land you can find in the U.S. is the land in Lancaster County, PA. There are LOTS of farms owned by the Amish, PA Dutch and other religious sects. Its "close to the City": Philadelphia is about 1 1/2 hours away; Lancaster is the county seat: Not more than 30 minutes away.; Harrisburg, PA [state capitol] about 45 minutes; York, PA, about 30 minutes. Baltimore, MD: about 1 1/2 hours. The crops you want to plant and harvest ALWAYS seem to do well in this area. I don't know about the water table. I know the Amish use wind and gas [propane] for just about everything. I don't know how much ground you're looking for or what you consider inexpensive. Thanks for asking your Q! I enjoyed answering it! VTY, Ron Berue Yes, that is my real last name!

Entertain southern Oregon, east of the Cascades. Water rights are available, 4 seasons, but typically mild winters, a diverse group of crops grown here (but I dont' know anyone who grows wheat), several cities in an easy commute, 300 days of sunshine a year.

Try Iowa. They have the most fertile soil ever seen. Growing season is about 7 months long. Winters are pretty harsh. But the variety of things that can grow in the soil is enormous. Even being in a rural area means you're not that far from a big city. Just my 2 cents.
